Have you ever stopped and thinked about how crazy the world is? Isn’t it crazy how we are constantly traveling at 1,670 km per hour, how we are being pulled by gravity to the center of an enormous sphere, how we are surrounded by exorbitantly huge oceans, how we live in the same planet than more than 8.7 million species, and many that have not even been discovered yet, and above all, how we are a little tiny microscopic particle in the middle of an immense planet?
This past week, I noticed a significant alteration in the weather and many rare conditions in the climate. This peculiarity made me reflect these past days about the mystique and intrigue of the orb we call home, planet Earth.
It is already late March, which means that summer should be coming to it’s end, but the opposite is occurring. All past week, I’ve been going to school and the heat has been infernal. This past week definitely had the hotter days in the whole summer, as if summer was just starting. The temperature raised as high as 32º C! Sweaty students were all over school, every classroom was very sultry, all the food inside lunchboxes got hot, and water fountains where in their maximum utility.
The weekend arrived, after a very intense, hot and sweaty week, it was finally Friday after school, the time to go right after school to the beach, some kilometers away from Lima to the south. We arrived kind of late and woke up there the next morning with all the enthusiasm to spend a wonderful day at the beach. Every day at school, we had been desiring to be spending that sun at the beach and not inside a classroom. When we looked outside the window, we were very disappointed. It was raining. The whole sky was covered by clouds, the mist was taking over the whole beach, and everything was wet by the rain.
How is it possible that one day I'm being irked by the intense sun in school, and the next day I am getting wet by the rain in the beach. At least in Peru, this is extremely rare. And guess what? The day after the rainy day was extremely hot again.
There is no doubt that our planet Earth is going through drastic changes. Whether its due to global warming, the alignment of the planets, or any other phenomenon, we are definitely facing many changes and jaw-dropping happenings. This shudders me and constantly drags me down to a lot of reflection and frightening thoughts.
Since I was a little girl, I have been afraid of the ocean. But the sharks in it are not what really give me the creeps, it is it’s immensity what frightens me. It blows my mind how tiny we are in this immense world, and sometimes it makes me feel insignificant. Have you ever wondered or even tried to imagine how big our planet actually is, and anyways how small it is in this Universe? Doesn’t it astonishes you how petite we are in this world and feel lost in the immensity of it?
After all, everything is about perspective. We need to make our perspective of our place in the universe broader, feeling tiny and lost in Earth’s immensity is health once in a while.
