I entered Sephora really thrilled, I was shaking of happiness and excitement. But this time, I wasn’t excited to enter this store to buy makeup or anything like that, I was excited because it was the spot in which I was going to surprise my sister.
This past week, my family and I traveled to New York City. This trip was actually a surprise. The purpose of it was celebrating my parent’s 18th anniversary and my sister’s 21st birthday. As my sister lives in Boston, she believed that only my mother was going to meet her in NYC, but the four of us surprised her.
As soon as my sister arrived to NYC, she met with my mother in Starbucks. My mom tricked her to go into Sephora with her for a while as there was a supposed “promotion”. They walked into the store, and there I was, hiding behind one of the cabinets. The reaction of my sister was priceless - thankfully I filmed it. She couldn’t believe her eyes, finding me in the middle of a store in NYC when she thought I was in Tambopata with my friends. We hugged and laughed for a while, filled with happiness and emotion. We left the store and started heading towards the apartment we rented. While we were walking, we bumped into my dad and León in one of the corners. Once again, my sister couldn’t believe her eyes! A few tears of emotion dropped down her eyes and she couldn’t stop smiling and hugging all of us. It had been almost 4 months since the last time we saw her and we had all missed her so much.
This was the start of a very memorable trip which I’ll be eternally grateful for. Now that we are apart, I really appreciate every moment that we have together, and this trip was a very valuable time for the five of us. We shared a lot of laughs, delicious brunches, lunches and dinners, entertaining walks and activities, trivial and important conversations, some necessary discussions, and even some tears.
In this trip, we also developed a lot of flexibility, patience and collaboration. It wasn’t easy to travel with a crazy and energetic three-year-old to New York, but we were able to handle it. Actually, taking León with us was not in our plans until two days before the trip, when we had a problem with our maid and other circumstances of life pushed us to take him with us. Obviously, our plans and the style of our trip changes drastically due to this change, but this didn’t stop of us from having a great time. Of course, we had to be extremely patient and flexible and collaborate with each one of us, but this only made our trip more remarkable, special and powerful.
Not only was it a celebration of my parent’s anniversary and my sister’s birthday, but also a celebration of our family and of life. I am very lucky to be part of this family and I’m really grateful for the unforgettable moments we’ve shared this week. We should all seek for opportunities to share with our families and always be grateful for them.
