"Bring the next pizza!", "Turn off that light in the back!", "Grab the pizza more from the bottom!", "The pizza is too cold already", "Fix her nails, add more make-up.", "Make sure to look at the camera.", "Try looking more natural.", "Add a tablespoon of sugar to the coke!", "Make sure to bite the middle of the pizza." ...
I woke up and it was still dark. It was my last day of internships and I had the luck to be invited to the production of a Pizza Hut commercial. Like every other type of production, it requires many hours, therefore I had to be there at 6:00 am. Although I hate waking up early and I usually wake up very tired and in a bad mood, I was able to easily wake up full of energy and excitement.
When I got there, everything was already set up, the production people had been there since 4:00 am setting everything up. As soon as I got there, the filming started. From 6:00 am - 9:30 am, the filming of the product took place. The commercial was for Pizza Hut's new pizza with cheese borders "Hut Cheese". Although it is only a 20 sec commercial, it takes HOURS to produce it. It may seem very simple, but it definitely isn't. It took plenty of shots and re-filming just to get a little 3 second shot. Every second of the commercial had to be perfect; the pizza had to look perfect, the hands that grabbed it had to be perfect, it had to have the right amount of cheese, it had to be freshly out of the oven so that it was hot and the cheese looked good, it had to have the right amount of oil so that it looked appetitive, etc. Most of the people who watch the commercial from their home might believe that the commercial they see is very simple, that the product they see is exactly what they will have when they buy it, that there are no tricks behind the commercial, and that everything is perfect. They are wrong. Most of the commercials we see on T.V or the ads we see everywhere, have some fakeness in them. Although you are going to receive a pizza with cheese inside it's borders, you'll definitely won't receive it as perfect and pretty as it looks in the commercial. Companies obviously tend to do this to make their products look amazing and provoke more people to buy them. Although I had already heard about this tricks and techniques that companies use in their products for advertisement, it was really interesting to see it with my own eyes; The pizza was sprayed with some special garlic to make it have more color, it was cleaned with a paper towel to make it look less greasy, and the coke contained 75% of coke and 15% of sprite so that it had a perfect color, it had some tablespoons of sugar so that it had the right amount of gas, and the icecubes where actually acrilic. I was very surprised by how many tricks are performed so that every little detail of the 20 seconds was perfect.
At 10:00 am the actors arrived. There were several extras to fill the background, and three main characters who are very famous in as they are part of Lima's "Escuela de Payasos". They arrived, got dressed up into their clowns costumes, got makeup applied, and where ready to start acting. It was very entrataining to watch these three "clowns" acting and it was clear that they had a lot of experience and had a lot of talent. They were super carismatic and easily made all of us watching laugh. They rarely made mistakes and where able to follow the script very well, therefore we were able to finish pretty fast. The same shots were filmed several times just to obtain perfection and have several options for editing. The three clowns had to take many bites of the pizza and many sips of the coke, and it had to be very precise so that it looked perfect in the camera. Thanks to the efficiency of the actors, we were able to wrap up the commercial very fast. The last step was to record the actor's voices so that it could be used as playback. At 1:00 pm we were already done, everyone was commenting about how fast it was done, as it usually takes much more time. We all ended up smelling like cheese and craving a hot pizza.
It was an amazing experience and a great way to end my internship!!
