"Can anyone recommend me a documentary?" I asked my friends via whatsapp.
Part of my summer homework was to watch two documentaries. Most of the recommendations I received were "Blackfish". This film is definitely on many's top of their head when thinking about documentaries. Honestly, each time I visit Netflix it is to watch Gossip Girl or any other series/movie; I had never even clicked on the Documentaries section. Anyways, I had always heard about this documentary, and somehow it always appeared as a recommendation in my Netflix account, so why don't give it a try?
Before watching the documentary, I thought that after watching it I would turn against killer whales and that they would frighten me, but it turns out that it wasn't the killer whales I turned against to, it was SeaWorld. "Blackfish" is about the untold side of the story of Tilikum, a performer killer whale that has killed several people.
"A mesmerising psychological thriller with a killer whale at its center, Blackfish is the first film since Grizzly Man to show how nature can get revenge on man when pushed to its limits."
Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the director of Blackfish, main's purpose was to tell the other side of the story. She wanted to make her audience know and rembember the truth of SeaWorld and how they've treated the whales all this time, so that people become aware and stop supporting this violence. Cowperthwaite would not be satisfied until she discovered the truth, because she was convinced that something wasn0t rifht and that it wasn't an accident.
"But something wasn’t right. Why would a highly intelligent animal attack its trainer – in effect, bite the hand that feeds it? I set out to understand this incident not as an activist, but as a mother (who had just taken her kids to SeaWorld) and as a documentary filmmaker (who can’t let sleeping dogs lie)." ~Gabriela Cowperthwaite

This documentary has definietely had an impact on anyone who has watched it and definitely on myself. It has affected SeaWorld's park attendance, as it dropped 5.2% in 2014 from the previous year and the company's stock went down 50%.

I have visited SeaWorld several times, watched many of their shows, interacted with some of their animals, and even swam with the dolphins. I've always loved animals and cherished any place that gave me the opportunity to interact with them, specially as a kid, so I always looked forward to visiting SeaWorld with a lot of excitement and hope; I drove my mom crazy to take me there everytime we traveled.
After watching this film, my desire for visiting SeaWorld had desifinitely decreased significantly. I feel dissapointed, sad and angry at this company and I definitely have a whole new perspective of it after knowing what its done.
This was a very powerful documentary, and one of the things that most shocked me was that all of the information is super credible and realiable. The use of several interviews to ex employees and trainers of SeaWorld made the information very reliable, and the stories they told were definitely astonishing and heartbreaking. "Blackfish" is able to reveal with very credible support that the actual victim of this tragedy is not the trainer who was killed, but Tilikum, the whale who was abused physicologically and physically for years.
If you're looking for a documentary to see, this is a must-watch! It will definitely make you see things diferently, reveal you the truth, entratain you, break your heart, and leave you speechless!
